Bei A Way Out handelt es sich um einen reinen Koop-Titel. Einen Singleplayer-Modus gibt es in dem Sinne nicht, da Aufgaben gemeinsam durchgeführt werden müssen.
Das Spiel handelt um die beiden Insassen Vincent und Leo. Diese 2 Männer kennen sich anfangs nicht, aber lernen sich kennen um dann gemeinsam aus dem Gefängnis auszubrechen.

Das Spiel wird in einem Split-Screen inszeniert, da auch beide unabhängig voneinander handeln müssen. Quicktime-Events sind ebenfalls vorhanden, aber alle ohne Probleme zu absolvieren.
