Splatoon 2 ist wie der Vorgänger ein Third-Person-Shooter in dem es das Ziel mit dem Team die Map in der entsprechenden Tintenfarbe einzufärben. Hierbei schlüpft man in die Rolle eine Inklings, welcher sich in einen Squid verwandeln kann um durch die Tinte des eigenen Teams zu schwimmen. Dies ermöglicht eine deutlich schnellere Fortbewegung und lädt dazu noch den Tintentank wieder auf.
