absurd levels of player failure
Wanting to reminisce u decided to replay some of Earth 2140 thinking “hey, maybe this time I won’t be utterly useless” — tried the normal campaign and both datadiscs for good measure, because why half-arse it when you can fully-arse it.
Now, I’m that kind of RTS player who wants to slowly build up — you know, get my economy rolling, spam some power plants, watch the snowball grow until the glorious moment when half the map is crawling with my units and my hackers or harvesters or whatever are just vibing in the back. CnC Generals with China hackers? perfect. wait forever, then delete the enemy in one go. Peak.
Except Earth 2140, being a beautiful stubborn 90s relic, just sneers at that idea:
“Oh, you wanted to build a proper base? nah mate. Here’s a sad little half-built barracks, two tanks, and by the way: the enemy will be here with high-tier laser tanks in five minutes, good luck.”
The resolution (1980x1024 or whatever crime I forced it into) doesn’t help either: makes everything look like lego pieces on a kitchen table. This game was never meant to be seen from space. Should have switched back, but by the time I noticed, I was already too busy getting my arse handed to me by the AI to bother.
But the real tragedy, the Shakespearean act V heartbreak, is the Hellmaker.
Look, the Hellmaker is my favourite unit in the entire game, full stop. Even the name is perfect: Hell. Maker. Visually loud, clunky, a glorious box of overcompensation on legs. Love it to bits. So imagine my face when one of the datadisc missions starts by teasing me: I see a few Hellmakers, some tigers (the big rocket mechs, right?), a couple of chicken scouts — I think “finally, my time to shine.”
I get all excited, try to build my infinite production loop (which was basically five Hellmakers in queue forever — no tigers sadly, because the game doesn’t give me the factory or tech to build more, thanks game). Push back the first wave, burn half my starting force holding a chokepoint — felt almost clever. Then, naturally, the game says “very cute” and sends two laser tanks that delete my entire bulwark of ten Hellmakers like they’re cardboard props. They do practically zero damage back. Two laser tanks. That’s it. And I’m sat there staring at the wreckage thinking: “...was that it?”
So yeah, another day, another humiliating defeat.
Me: hoping to build a base, turtle, watch the snowball.
Earth 2140: “here’s your partial base, now watch it burn.”
Hellmaker: amazing, gorgeous, completely inadequate for stopping anything that isn’t already half-dead.
No skirmish mode either, so can’t even vent by turtling and overbuilding just for fun. The game was not built for my kind of playstyle, clearly.
Yet I still keep telling everyone it’s great.
Because it is. And because Hellmaker.
Watch if you want to see how not to play Earth 2140.
Hellmaker forever. everything else can go melt.
