[AC] Turbo Force - 1-ALL Clear (995,200 to 2-2)
Turn on captions for some extra comments.
Turbo Force came out in arcades 1991 and was made by Video System, who would later go on to make the Sonic Wings/ Aero Fighters series.
Turbo Force is an incredible kusoge with nothing else out there that's quite like it.
It's also the only car shmup that I know off.
Story:
"An American Air Force pilot, while racing his car on a public road, wanders into another mysterious dimension and gets caught up in a war there. Oops! This other dimension takes the pilot (and two of his buddies, if all three players are used) into a future world which has been invaded by an alien civilization. The pilot modifies his car into a flying, fighting machine and sets out to defend the new world from its enemies."
Yeah this game is also one of those very rare 3 player shmups.
System:
- Your shot has limited ammo. The more you shoot, the more you lose power. So you only want to shoot when you have to. The power difference between power level 9 and 4 is absolutely gigantic.
- Powerups are completely luck-based.
- Despite the game being named Turbo Force, your movement speed is very slow. There is also some slight inertia before you start moving at full speed. You do stop at a dime at least.
- There is rank and it's extremely aggressive. More on that later.
- There is only a single extend in this game at 200k.
- This is a one-button game, you can only shoot. One thing this game got right is that you actually have autofire by default.
Powerups:
There are two types of powerups; P and ?.
P powerups are shot powerups and they drop down the screen immediately. Picking one up increases your fire level by 2.
? powerups give a random effect when picked up and randomly bounce around the screen for a long time. The random effect can be one of these four:
- A bomb. Does huge damage and cancels all bullets on screen. It takes quite a while to go off and you're not invincible during it, so you can still die after picking it up. The most common effect.
- A flash bomb. Instant and very short bomb. Does barely any damage but any enemy killed with it makes it drop a shot powerup. You mostly never want this. Rare effect.
- A shield. By far the best effect, makes you completely invincible for a while and you do absurd damage to anything you touch. Very rare effect.
- Full power. Only happens when you're very low on power.
Besides the ? items being completely random, what enemies drop powerups is random as well. Some have a very high chance of appearing every time, but it's not fixed. So if you're unlucky you can just not get anything good and just die. Bosses can get basically impossible if you don't have enough power for them.
The ? items bouncing around randomly can also be super annoying when they don't want to come down the screen when you need them.
Basically there are no two runs of this game that are ever the same. And you need at least some good luck to get far into the game.
Loops:
The game loops infinitely.
There are no differences between the loops except that the rank carries over from the previous loop.
Rank:
This game has quite possibly the most ridiculous rank system I've ever seen. It gets like borderline impossible very quickly and you need to suicide to lower it. In a game where you only get one extend period.
Rank affects bullet speed, enemy health, rate of fire and closeness of bullet sealing. Dying once will literally make all the bullets suddenly move at half speed. It also affects boss HP, when the rank is high it's basically impossible to kill a boss before the timeout pattern starts.
The world record gets to 3-6 and I have absolutely no idea how you even beat two loops of this with the amount of lives you get.
The theory right now is that there are multiple different rank values working at the same time. Rank for survival time, rank for shot power and rank for total defeated enemies. So triple rank. The first can be lowered through dying but the others do not. For the loops you might want to not shoot any low-value enemies to keep the enemy count rank low.
Scoring:
Not much besides "kill stuff".
Though bizarrely there are a bunch of secret bonuses in stage 1 and stage 1 only:
- Destroy all four sides of the bunkers before destroying the main body for a 10k bonus.
- You can get an additional 10k bonus if you destroy a tank while it's inside the bunker.
You basically want to strike a balance between destroying as much as possible while also not wasting all your power.
There might be different score strats for if you're going for loops, since you need to do a whole lot more rank management.
Played for La Calice Cup.
