ACA NeoGeo The King of Fighters 2000 - Kyo and Iori (But mostly K') Playthrough
Uh, Zero didn't cooperate at the end but taking the win.
The ACA version of this game is fairly arcade accurate, but there's just a tiny problem with that (and especially for my sanity). There are moments where Final Burn Alpha will run the game in a way that preserves inputs and removes dropped inputs from slowdown. For a few days I had to figure out why when I would try to do Heat Drive after K''s Second Shell that I kept getting his dragon punch instead.
Well, turns out, on actual timing with the slowdown from the flame effect from Second Shell, a legacy thing for KOF and flame particle effects, the double quarter circle forward was getting eaten unless I performed the move after a lot of the particle effect had resolved. This creates a weird execution timing. And I know my execution is perfect in this case because I have input display on in FBA and it's showing perfect QCFx2s. Not "kind of sort of" but I was shocked to see that my practice was paying off in terms of Down, Down Forward, Forward inputs.
On Final Burn Alpha, the super always comes out. I don't have to think about the input or execution at all. Unfortunately, the game doesn't like video capture software much at all. I opted for the ACA PC version, but it caused me quite a few outbursts of anger because doing K''s signature combo just feels bad. I'm doing a lot of thinking for a simple input like QCFx2 236 236 P or whatever.
King of Fighters 2000 is probably my favorite KOF, though in this playthrough it really wasn't loving me back lol. I love the music, love the artwork, though I think the NESTS Saga is very much a product of a cross over series that just cannot really subsist on pure cross overs with no original games coming out. I just think that using the Robo Army property and this weird vision of the future where microwave energy and MOTION CAPTURE leads to weapons of mass destruction was really prescient in bizarre ways. Particularly, it's a weird sort of tell of the anxieties SNK faced as a studio in the case of Krizalid and in the case of Zero from 2000, well, a guy who looks like Hitler... our descent into fascism here in the United States. Maybe a bit too prophetic while also really silly and stupid in that KOF way. Anime, baby.
I think the design of the arcade mode behavior is a fairly mixed bag. Some patterns seem okay enough, but it's way too much "the opponent is a punching bag or a genius" for my liking. Not consistent enough, really mindless. It's no wonder SF6 could just swoop in. Arika is unmatched and this is just another series where I think designers probably stopped trying to just keep their general sanity in tact, especially in what is a thankless genre and market.
