Accessibility: Calm Area at a Theater
Visual Description: A smartphone camera records in a room with very dim lighting. A woman holds the camera and tries to angle it to show different features of the room, including paneling that reduces sound, different seating options, and sensory activities.
Description: I recorded this at the theater during intermission. I was delighted to learn that there was a "calm area" specifically for those of us on the autism spectrum. I wanted to go ahead and make a video talking about it because it made my night. I'm autistic, and understand firsthand how difficult excessive sensory stimuli can be. Having a non-overwhelming space to retreat to for folks experiencing sensory overload is an amazing accessibility accommodation. I wanted to rave about this. It makes me feel seen, and feel hopeful for the future to see such thoughtfulness towards me and people like me.
