If you want to please Astarion, Yurgir must die. There are a few "peaceful" resolutions with him, all through dialogue. But if you want to engage him, don't follow his Displacer Beast. Instead, once you jump down the staircase to it, jump up the one across and you'll be flanking him. You can initiate the battle with a Surprise Attack, but Yurgir himself has Alert, his minions will be Surprised. You can also kill him and Lyrthindor at the same time, as long as Yurgir dies first. Also, I recommend to face him at Level 9 so you have access to Lvl 5 Spells. If you are Lvl 8 or below, bring a Warlock to use Hunger of Hadar.
