PRESS RELEASE

Dust off your dad’s wooden racquet and pick the cobwebs off the balls at the back of the shed because the Actua Sports team are back. Tennis games have been knocking around in some form or other ever since Pong blinked into life. Unfortunately, recent offerings have been less playable than a Becker forehand smash. Actua Tennis will add a welcome degree of style and playability when it arrives on PCCD-ROM and PlayStation this Easter 1998.

Actua Tennis is the new addition to the award winning Actua Sports series. Actua Soccer and Actua Golf have established the Actua Sports brand as the last word in sports simulations. With such an excellent pedigree the hype is already building and Actua Tennis is looking more like a grand slam winner than anything seen in British tennis in the last twenty years.

Actua Tennis contains all the features that have made the other Actua titles so successful. The players will be animated using the latest motion capture technology, giving the full, fluid movement of real tennis pros and that's because it's real tennis pros we captured. Matches will take place in True 3D courts, allowing you to view the action from any angle and to replay those dubious line calls again and again. The final ‘ace’ if you will, that Gremlin 'serve up' is, as always, a celebrity commentary from a Mr and Ms Big of tennis. No, not Derek Batey and friends, but the equally respected Barry Davies who will be joined by Sue Barker.

Those of a technical bent amongst you will be very excited to learn that Actua Tennis will give you your first chance to check out the new Actua Sports 3D engine. For the PC version, the fully 3D environment will be greatly enhanced by its compatibility with NEC’s Power VR chip. As with all new Gremlin titles this will offer users an array of spellbinding 3D effects. These include real time shadows, fogging, solid external objects courtesy of the 32-bit Z buffer, smooth shading, translucency and bilinear filtering which eliminates pixellation. There are no break points here though as Actua Tennis is also compatible with all major 3D graphics accelerator cards.

With other companies still trying (and clearly failing) to match Actua Soccer, Gremlin has gone far above and beyond anything seen before. The original sports titles met with gasps of astonishment when they were first unveiled to industry insiders. This new engine is a leap forward of equal extent and will ensure Gremlin stays well ahead of the pack.

Actua Tennis will feature the full range of playing options, including Professional and Amateur tournaments as well as tours, singles, doubles and (for those of you who like the laydees), mixed doubles. The game also contains motion captured umpires, line judges and ball boys and features players with the nicest legs seen in any video game ever (well, apart from Tomb Raider obviously).

So get the false tan in, cancel the two weeks in Turkey and splash out your holiday ‘spends’ on Actua Tennis, the (strawberries and) cream of sports sims. The spirit of Dan Maskell is smiling benignly at us from that great tennis court in the sky.

Format: PC CD Rom and Playstation.
