Adventure Island was released in 1986 for the NES and some other consoles. It's a basic side scroller in which you control Master Higgins, much like Super Mario Brothers, through 8 worlds with 4 levels each. You get various powerups and weapons throughout the course of the game, some are useful but others I can't even guess what they do. The controls feel a bit slippery: it takes ages to stop and turn around, so you're better off dodging enemies than waiting for them to pass. One cool item is the skateboard: it makes you go faster and allows you take one hit before losing a life. One big problem with the skateboard is that you can't stop or go left when you have it - it only rolls towards the right. This gets very frustrating when you're dealing with moving platforms, fast enemies or items that appear behind you because there's no way to go back to get them. The white bars at the top of the screen indicate your energy: they go down depending of how much effort it takes to perform an action - running drains it the fastest while standing still doesn't affect it at all. Skateboarding is better than running as far as energy is concerned because it takes less effort and the speed is also double, taking less time to beat the level. When all the bars run out, you die and you lose any weapon you had up to that point. The energy can be restored by collecting just about any item, but some restore more energy than others. Grabbing a milk bottle (labeled "M") fills up the entire energy bar. At the end of each world, you fight a boss which has a different head every time you face him. The boss takes more hits to defeat as the game progresses. The game is frustrating to say the least, and it gets boring really quick. There's little variety too - the stages look the same, just with more enemies and different backgrounds, but probably the biggest issue is that you die in one hit. Considering how packed with enemies some levels are, this adds up to the frustration factor a lot ! Some areas are so difficult that I can't possibly imagine beating this game on a real NES console with no save-states or continues. Final verdict: certainly not the worst NES game, but god damn is it hard !
