Developed by the creators of Arise: A Simple Story, this game offers a somber look at a world decimated by human impact, contrasting the destructive relationships between humans and nature with the power of hope and progress.
The game is set in a vast, surrealistic world that depicts the destructive relationships between humans and nature in a beautiful demonstration of abstract artistry. The game is made up of multiple connected maps, which allow players to move around seamlessly to each map without any loading times. This open field is one of the largest in the Atelier series, offering players a massive, 'living' field to explore and experience.
The story follows Gaia's quest to rescue the souls of extinct animals and bring them back to Mother's Ark. Mother has used all of her life force to save the souls of the animals, which are now trapped in their vessels. As Gaia, players will revive these creatures after learning their final fate, including the last whale harpooned, the final eagle caged, the last deer hunted down, and more. Along the way, players will have to survive encounters with dangerous, oil-covered Devourers that roam the wasteland in search of remaining life.
Gaia's traversal abilities will allow players to glide, jump, and dash to explore new areas and evade deadly traps. Additionally, her special gifts will grant players the power to clear the oil that consumes the world, face hungry Devourers, and break souls free. The game offers a total of 11 party members, making it one of the largest in the series. Players can mix and match from these 11 party members on their journey, reuniting with characters from previous games and meeting new key characters essential to the story.
