This is a mashup of Bullet Hell and Arkanoid or any other brick breaker you can think of, tossed into a glorious trip through Hell. 9 characters to choose from(you have to unlock some) that each have their own strengths and weaknesses. The changes are mostly slightly different so I don't think any of them feel completely unique, but I do think they add enough variety to gameplay that you have a ton of replay value here.

Graphically the game has some incredible pixel art with some very satisfying color schemes and excellent animations in the background. The enemies also look good, but really the highlight are the little demons dancing in the background or other things you'll spot. There is a good variety of animations for the different character's attacks that look great while managing not to be overbearing.

Great soundtrack, and sound. I do wish we had more music, but what we get is good.

Gameplay is where the game shines the most. You'll take your character and launch discs that you try to keep moving, which are then used to build combos for yourself as well as damaging the enemies. You also have the ability to "cleanse" which will shoot them back towards the top of the screen and remove enemy bullets. You can regenerate the cleanses over time by hitting those discs enough time. It's a rather simple concept, incredibly easy to pick up quickly. It takes a bit more to master though, and for every stage you complete successfully your confidence builds. It's a pretty rare occasion where a game makes me feel like I'm improving and that I'm essentially a badass at it. But Against Great Darkness pulls that off here in the best possible ways.

Game's great. Absolutely one of the best games of the year so far. Highly recommended.
