Norman Campaign
Battle of Hastings: 1066
Age of Empires IV takes players on a journey through the ages as they command influential leaders, build expansive kingdoms, and fight some of the most critical battles of the Middle Ages.
At the start of the Norman Campaign — just one of four campaigns available in Age of Empires IV — William of Normandy sets forth on the hard-fought road to conquer England and become its new king. What follows is an epic story of succession, family conflict, anarchy, and rebellion — all with the players in the front seat.
The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14 October 1066 between the Norman-French army of William, the Duke of Normandy, and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold Godwinson, beginning the Norman conquest of England. It took place approximately 7 mi (11 km) northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex, and was a decisive Norman victory.
Age of Empires IV is a real-time strategy video game developed by Relic Entertainment in partnership with World's Edge and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is the fourth installment of the Age of Empires series. The game was released October 28, 2021, for Windows.
Game events are set to be in the Middle Ages. Amongst others there will be a campaign telling a story about the Norman Conquest of England.
Campaigns
The game will have 4 campaigns at the launch date:
- The Normans: a story about Norman conquest of England
- The Hundred Years War: an epic conflict between England and France
- The Rise of Moscow: a story about the rise of Grand Duchy of Moscow amongst other Rus' principalities
- The Mongol Empire: expansion of one of the largest empires of all time
Gameplay
Most game mechanics will migrate directly from Age of Empires II. For example, acquiring resources requires drop sites, stone has been added back as a resource since being removed in Age of Empires III, and religious units (formerly known as monks) can convert, meaning that they can cause other units to switch sides, permanently giving control over the affected enemy units to the player who carried out the conversion to completion. As a mechanic never before implemented in this series, religious units can trigger a conversion area of effect when holding a relic. This mechanic was intended for Age of Empires III, but was not added.
There will be 8 civilizations available at the release date; the English, the Chinese, the Mongols, the Delhi Sultanate, the French, the Abbassid Dynasty, the Holy Roman Empire, and the Rus.
Development
On August 21, 2017, Microsoft announced Age of Empires IV, developed by Relic Entertainment. Microsoft's Executive Vice-President of Gaming, Phil Spencer, confirmed on June 11, 2019, that Age of Empires IV is still in development, with more information coming later in 2019. On November 14, 2019, gameplay footage of Age of Empires IV was shown at the X019 event. It showed medieval warfare between English and Mongol forces. On March 16, 2021, the fan preview was released, showing more detailed gameplay and also including the two other known civilizations, the Chinese and the Delhi Sultanate. Microsoft announced at E3 2021 that the game will release on Game Pass for PC on October 28, 2021.
