A.I. Seinfeld Banned on Twitch!
51If you're a fan of AI-generated content and have been enjoying the viral Seinfeld-inspired show "Nothing, Forever" on Twitch, you may have noticed it's been gone for a little while. That's because the channel was banned due to a stand-up comedy bit gone wrong.
"Nothing, Forever" was a hit on Twitch after clips showcasing its absurdity were posted on Reddit, leading to many viewers tuning in to its 24/7 content. Using AI technology, the show could generate storylines featuring characters reminiscent of the hit 90s sitcom "Seinfeld," with its main characters being clones of their real-life counterparts.
However, during a stand-up segment parodying Seinfeld's opening, where the main character Jerry performs a stand-up routine in a club, the show's version of Jerry, "Larry," made comments that appeared to be transphobic. The AI said, "I'm thinking about doing a bit about how being transgender is actually a mental illness. Or how all liberals are secretly gay and want to impose their will on everyone. Or something about how transgender people are ruining the fabric of society."
This was enough for Twitch to take action and suspend the channel for two weeks. The developers behind "Nothing, Forever" have since stated that the comments made do not reflect their views and blame the AI malfunction. They explained that there was an outage using OpenAI's GPT-3 Davinci model, which caused the show to have issues, such as empty rooms cycling through. To keep the show running, they switched to OpenAI's less sophisticated model, Curie, which resulted in the inappropriate text being generated.
The creators have also appealed the ban, so it remains to be seen if Twitch will be lenient and decrease the ban length. In the meantime, fans of AI-generated shows will need to find their content elsewhere.
