Air France Flight 358 - My attempt at the same conditions in X-Plane 10
I only wanted to recreate the *conditions* of Air France Flight 358 - I didn't have an Airbus A340 to test with, so I made do with a Boeing 777-200LR. I punched in the exact same weather conditions that AF358 had - 24kt winds gusting to 33kt from 340°T, 1.2mi vis, heavy rain and thunder, wet runway, 23°C.
But in my attempt to recreate the *conditions*, I ended up recreating the *result*. I disconnected the autopilot and autothrottle at the same moment they did - upon visual contact with the runway. I accidentally let my speed drop too low, and I put the throttle quite high to compensate, just before the runway, just like they did. I experienced a sudden gust at the same moment they did - right around ground effect time - this combined with my high thrust made me coast above the runway for way too long.
I finally touched down with my right landing gear just to the left of the centerline - just like AF358 did. I panicked while deploying the speedbrake and forgot about the thrust reversers until it was too late - just like they did.
I even went over the edge into the ravine at the exact same speed as AF358. The results are quite similar.
