Alright, live and learn, isn't that what they say?
I found out you can get a companion in Shady Sands and he made a whole lotta difference...
This video is basically me clearing out the Radscorpion cave and finishing the quest.

Again, sorry for the little mouse pointer in the middle of the screen. I didn't notice it until I had rendered the video out :/ I will try and fix it for the next time I play (unfortunately I made the first three Fallout videos at once, so the next two have it as well)
