American McGee's Alice was one of the PC games back in 2000 that made me want to become a PC gamer. The gruesome spin on the classic tale caught my attention, but I never got around to getting a decent PC to play the game. After waiting 11 years I finally got the chance to experience how sick and twisted Wonderland can be.

Alice: Madness Returns follows Alice as she is dealing with her own personal struggles. She's going crazy and her imagination (Wonderland) has become dark and relentless. She struggles with trying to rekindle the traumatic memories of how her family was killed in a house fire. Throughout the game Alice searches for the truth as to what really happened and why. The storytelling is clever since it is told through both Alice's reality and imagination.

It seems like games this generation use new gameplay elements to add a sense of freshness to the genre and to give players the opportunity to encounter something new. This isn't the case with this game. Alice: Madness Returns plays it safe with its tradition action adventure gameplay. It's a little unfortunate that the game doesn't offer anything new. It's not such a bad thing since the controls work well; it just feels a little stale.

Armed with her unique arsenal of weapons, Alice goes toe to toe with some of the creepiest enemies in Wonderland. The combat seems generic but the addition of the unique weapons helps. She has a few tricks up her dress with the skills to deflect enemy attacks and easily being able to switch weapons on the fly. Traversing around the environments works well due to Alice's triple jumping and floating abilities. There are also a few lighthearted side-scrolling levels added in for good taste, but sadly there just aren't enough.

The environments are imaginative and creative and look great. On the other hand, all of the character models except for Alice could use some work. The textures on the characters are muddy which causes them to look unpleasant. It's obvious that most of the attention was focused on Alice because she looks great. The amazing soundtrack and voice acting are also pertinent to the admirable presentation.

Alice: Madness Returns is a game you should consider playing. While the gameplay is very plain and doesn't provide evidence of growth in the genre, the presentation and story more than make up for it.
