This is an inventive game but nowhere near on the level of Mario games. It’s more like Luigi’s Mansion in structure but again not as good. The gimmick is that you can where different costumes in levels that give you abilities. The abilities are very basic. Usually just one button press to attack. For example, the cowboy suit lets Peach Lasso. The Swordfighter costume allows a couple more move like hit upwards and parry. There are some inventive abilities like being a chef and cooking, and being a detective and looking for clues. My personal favourite is the ice skating where Peach is animated elegantly. All of these costumes make the game more interesting as none of them are really great, but changing the gameplay constantly keeps it engaging.
The main objective in the game is to collect Sparkle gems within each level (like stars or moons in Mario games). Some of these can be easy, and some of these can be infuriating. Often you are given no clue in how you are supposed to complete a minigame within the level to earn the maximum number of gems. This can lead to a lot of trial and error, but even once you do start to understand what you need to do in order to get all the gems, it’s another thing actually doing them without making mistakes. The games look very easy but some of them can be ruthless and one tiny mistake can make you lose.
The biggest problem I have with this game is that if you do lose, you have to start the whole level again, including watching all of the cutscenes. There are no checkpoints or ways to skip a story. They included a cutscene skip but most of the story is done in live action rather than in cutscenes. But even the cutscene skip is flawed as it doesn’t always work.
If you want to complete the game 100%, be prepared to watch the same old story animations over and over again. It’s very annoying. They didn’t even include checkpoints to restart failed missions.
The music and overall production values are very Nintendo. I didn’t encounter any bugs and everything looks beautiful and functions tight, but what is very anti-Nintendo is the way they pushed extra content out of the game just to give some false value from essentially a very short game.
Finding all the Gems is rewarding in itself but it shouldn’t require multiple playthroughs of the full level. It doesn’t even let you quit out to obtain a reward if you collect it. Say if you are missing one gem and it is right at the start of the level. You go into the level and collect the gem; you are forced complete the whole level again to save the gem.
I collected all the gems before fighting the last boss and I thought I would be done, but then the game gave me more challenges by hiding little Ninja Theets throughout every level. This means I had to do every level again to find the Theets. Again, not allowed to quit out once I find them (usually at the start of every level).
It’s such a cheap way to elongate the game. These levels are not fun to replay. I wouldn’t have minded so much if you could at least choose the part in the level to go back to.
There are challenges to do the boss fight in a certain way and without getting hit. Some bosses are great for this, others are just a test of patience.
The minigames are also surprisingly hard. They require a lot of restarts in order to win a gold medal. They are kind of fun but absolutely ruthless and end up getting boring after so many restarts.
If I wasn’t going for the 100%, I would have completed the game in less than 5 hours, but because of the cheap ways they use to make the game bigger, I ended up spending 20 hours and becoming an alcoholic as I stayed up incredibly late (sometimes to 6am and even 8am) to race to 100% this game and make over 115 guide videos in 5 days.
What rewards did I get for getting all of the Sparkle Gems? Another dress!
After the amount of dresses I had already bought from the shop, this wasn’t a special gift at all.
At least there was the reward from finding all the Ninja Theets on all the levels right?
What could it be? It can’t be another dress……. Yes, it’s another dress. To wear when there is nothing else to do in the game.
This game is a master class of wasting time. It makes the game way too long in very cheap ways. To think that I spend the same amount of time on this game as Mario Wonder is crazy. Mario is packed with secrets and is pure gameplay all the way. This is a very short game with very little respect for the player’s time. If I completed this game in 5 hours, I would have been very positive about this game, but since it was a Nintendo game, I usually find much more reward in finding all the secrets so I went for them. I would have never expected finding all the secrets would ruin the game for me.
