Final Fight Arcade playthrough - Capcom Beat 'em up bundle
Review:
This is the arcade version of the game played through the ‘Capcom Belt collection’ (JPN), AKA ‘Capcom Beat 'em up collection’ in the West, on Switch.
This game is the game started a plethora of clones including Streets of Rage. It started it all for the 16-bit era and pretty much perfected the formula on the first go. Unfortunately, playing it now seems a bit basic because other games copied the formula so closely but added something extra to make the game different.
There is a very small number of moves, with only one attack button, but it’s still a lot for it’s time compared to the 8-bit games.
The graphics are great and the backgrounds are varied and atmospheric. Unfortunately, this collection doesn’t have a CRT filter so it looks way too sharp on a modern TV. A very lazy move by the developers so it means we can’t see it the way it was meant to be seen.
The music is really repetitive. None of stands out and is forgettable but is used in many instances of the game. You couldn’t identify a level by its music.
There is a decent selection of weapons and enemy types, but not enough to keep the game interesting for the full run.
There are only 6 levels but at a playtime of an hour, the later levels can drag.
When this game was released, it was leagues ahead of the competition. It’s just unfortunate that the competition copied and made slight improvements to make this look worse now.
Still a decent game.
