All NEW 2024 Porsche 718 Spyder RS - Driving REVIEW, interior, exterior (GT Silver Metallic)
Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Boxster concept car, Porsche is proudly introducing the most powerful version of its well-loved mid-engined roadster yet - the all-new Porsche Seven-Eighteen Spyder RS. This model marks the first instance of Porsche employing the high-revving naturally aspirated engine from the Nine-Eleven GT3 in an open-topped mid-engined sports car.
Porsche has successfully set a new pinnacle for the seven-eighteen mid-engine model line with a sports car crafted for maximal driving pleasure. The new seven-eighteen Spyder RS stands as the open-top counterpart to the seven-eighteen Cayman GT4 RS. It boasts a 368 kW (500 PS) naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine from the Nine-Eleven GT3, a significant upgrade for an open-topped mid-engined sports car. This same lightweight power unit, renowned for its high-revving design, also powers the Porsche Nine-Eleven GT3 Cup racing car.
The seven-eighteen Spyder RS shares an identical powertrain with the closed seven-eighteen Cayman GT4 RS. The six-cylinder boxer engine has a cylinder displacement of 4.0 litres and revs up to 9,000 rpm, generating an output of 368 kW (500 PS) and maximum torque of 450 Newton metres. This engine, when combined with a short-ratio seven-speed PDK transmission, propels the two-seater roadster from 0-100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds, and 0-200 km/h in a mere 10.9 seconds.
Keeping up with modern RS models, the seven-eighteen Spyder RS is exclusively available with Porsche's dual-clutch transmission (PDK). This gearbox allows for swift shifts through its seven gears, ensuring maximum performance. Furthermore, the Spyder RS weighs a mere 1,410 kilograms, making it lighter by 40 kg than the seven-eighteen Spyder with PDK and even by 5 kg compared to the closed seven-eighteen Cayman GT4 RS.
The front end of the seven-eighteen Spyder RS closely resembles that of the seven-eighteen Cayman GT4 RS. In a bid to improve aerodynamics, the front bonnet is crafted from Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) as standard, with two NACA air intakes to enhance brake cooling. Unlike the Cayman, the Spyder RS features a striking ducktail-like tear-off edge instead of a wing, which alongside other aerodynamic components, maintains the car's balance and ensures driving stability at high speeds.
Porsche has fitted the new seven-eighteen Spyder RS with a manually operated single-layer lightweight soft-top. The compact design, consisting of a sun sail and a weather deflector, provides flexibility as they can be removed and stowed individually or together within the vehicle. Moreover, the entire roof weighs just 18.3 kg, providing a significant weight reduction compared to both the seven-eighteen Spyder and the seven-eighteen Boxster.
The seven-eighteen Spyder RS boasts a high-precision and agile sports suspension, borrowing components from the seven-eighteen Cayman GT4 RS. It features Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with sports tuning, and is lowered by 30 millimetres. The ride height, camber, track, and anti-roll bar can all be adjusted individually, providing a more relaxed, convertible-style setup compared to the seven-eighteen Cayman GT4 RS.
The sporty character extends to the interior too. The standard full bucket seats, made of lightweight CFRP in a carbon-weave finish, offer impressive lateral support. Seat covers are made of black leather with perforated Race-Tex seat centres featuring contrasting colours. To further personalize, Porsche offers four plain and three metallic paints, including the new Vanadium Grey Metallic, and special colours like Arctic Grey, Shark Blue, and Ruby Star Neo.
Porsche also offers an optional Weissach Package, which further enhances the car's sporty aesthetic with lightweight, optional magnesium forged wheels and titanium sports exhaust system tailpipes. Exclusive to the Spyder RS buyers is a Porsche Design Timepieces handcrafted chronograph – a high-quality watch crafted in Porsche's in-house watchmaking operation in Solothurn, Switzerland.
