13BMW i5 Touring Review: The Practical Bimmer Goes Electric\n\nThe BMW i5 is already one of the most compelling electric vehicles on the market, combining a premium badge with rapid performance and long range. But for those who need a bit more utility, BMW now offers the i5 Touring estate model. We get behind the wheel to see if adding more cargo space compromises the i5's appeal.\n\nPracticality With A Premium Badge\nOn the surface, not much separates the i5 Touring from its sedan counterpart. The two models share nearly identical exterior styling, with the Touring's extended roof and elongated rear doors being the key distinctions. Up front is BMW's latest design language which, while controversial, looks better integrated on the i5 than some other recent models.\n\nThe big payoff comes when you open the rear hatch. With the rear seats upright, the Touring boasts a generous 570 liters (20.1 cubic feet) of cargo space - a big jump over the sedan's 490-liter trunk. Fold the 40/20/40 split rear seatbacks and you have a whopping 1,700 liters (60 cu-ft) to work with. Those are excellent numbers for an EV estate.\nPremium Cabin, Minus A Few Quirks\n\nSlip inside and you're treated to BMW's latest intuitive curved display layout, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch central touchscreen seamlessly integrated. Material quality is superb, with the right mix of soft-touch surfaces and textured aluminum trim. Front seats are all-day comfortable and supportive.\n\nThe back seat is a bit more hit-or-miss. While there's ample leg and headroom for adults, the lower cushions are quite flat and lacking thigh support for longer journeys. The middle seat is raised and firmer, making it suitable for shorter trips only. At least the Touring has a frunk to supplement cargo-carrying abilities.\n\nSilent and Rapid Performance\nLike the sedan, the i5 Touring is available with a choice of two powertrains. The eDrive40 model produces 335 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque from its single electric motor. That's enough for a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds. The hotter M60 xDrive pumps out 601 hp and 738 lb-ft from its dual motors, rocketing to 60 in just 3.7 ticks.\n\nRegardless of powertrain, the i5 Touring delivers the sublime, silent acceleration inherent to all EVs. More impressive is the model's range - up to 344 miles for the eDrive40 and 310 miles for the M60 per EPA estimates. That outranges key rivals like the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo.\n\nOn twisty roads, the Touring's lower center of gravity pays dividends over taller SUV EVs. The steering is nicely weighted and body motions are well controlled, though we noticed some impact harshness over sharper bumps. Overall, it delivers a sporty yet comfortable ride.\n\nThe Verdict: The Go-To Premium Electric Wagon\nWhile it won't be a huge seller, the 2024 BMW i5 Touring is an important addition to the EV market. It successfully combines practical cargo-hauling with BMW's renowned driving dynamics and luxury trappings. Apart from a cramped middle-rear seat, there are few compromises to bemoan.\nSure, the i5 Touring commands a lofty price starting around $70,000. But that's par for the course in today's premium EV arena.
