Overall I thought AM2R was a much better experience to play than Samus Returns. Maybe its the Super Metroid fan in me but the flow of the game is so much better. There are more boss fights though none as good as the Carpel Tunnel Robot. The comfort of an actually controller goes along way for this game too.
I do appreciate the story and lore touches. From the Federation soldiers in actual action. To their research vessel and even the gun ship that came in for the rescue mission.
On the down side the Metroid Bosses are actually pretty weak and can be easily exploited. The only other thing I can think of is the lack of a Grapple Beam but you do get the Speed Booster which Return of Samus did not have.
There is a lot of nice little touches here that make this feel like an actual Nintendo release as opposed to a fan made project by one guy.
Its no wonder he was picked up by Ori and the Blind Forest's Moon Studios.
