AM4 Motherboard Overclocking & Chipset Compatibilty Explained

Today we are looking at the AMD AM4 chipsets and the differences between them.
We often get asked the same questions, so i thought i would make a video to try and answer them in one go! I will probably not answer every question here but it will give you a good overview to what works with what and what your likely results will be.
To sum up the basics
A320 Chipset
Low end or entry level boards with limited features and generally poor VRM solution. These boards will support overclocking the RAM in most cases, and will allow you to use AMD's PBO or precision boost overclocking, the automatic system of getting the higher frequencies on most AMD processors and APU's.
These boards DO NOT support ANY manual overclocking or manual frequency selection.
Some boards will have the settings in the BIOS or UEFI but the settings will be reset to defaults after a reboot.
These boards generally will have support for almost all AMD AM4 processors but are ideally paired with entry level parts and processors in the Athlon, Ryzen 3 and Ryzen 5 families. With a rated TDP of 65W or lower
Using Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 processors are not recommended i my opinion due to the higher 95W TDP and higher, but they are technically supported.
B450 Chipset (and B350)
Entry and mid range platform with models ranging from low cost entry level and at the top end B450 boards will support most AM4 processors but i would be inclined to stop at the Ryzen 7 family due to limited VRM on some models.
B450 boards WILL allow overclocking of both the RAM and CPU frequencies and some models will allow further voltage tweaks and offer a good general level of reliability but again the motherboards voltage control and VRM quality will vary for model to model.
B550 X370, X470 and X570 Chipsets
These are intended for high end systems and generally have multiple phase VRM and power delivery solutions and are suited for mid to top tier processors. As will all AM4 motherboards there are lots of models to choose from and entry level boards based on these chipsets are similar in performance to high end B450 boards and the high end B550 X470 and X570 boards will work really well with Ryzen 9 processors and will support further overclocking over and above the processors designed limits. As always your mileage may vary based on other factors such as component quality.
These higher tier boards usually come with extra SATA ports, M.2 slots and larger VRM heatsinks and sometimes upgraded audio CODEC and LAN or WIFI over the lower end B450 boards. However if you are not overclocking your CPU or don't need these extra features then a good mid range B450 is possibly a better option
