Amazing Before & After VFX Breakdown - The Umbrella Academy
With Great Superheroes, come Great Superpowers... which means a great-load of special effects.
The Spin VFX team delivered 563 shots for the first season of the Netflix original series "The Umbrella Academy" whilst the Weta digital team mainly concentrated on Pogos scenes.
This show required complex effects simulations and massive destruction.
A lot of background work had to be done, this was mainly accomplished by making use of partial sets and green screens.
One of the most complex shots was that of the "I think we're alone now" sequence in which each of the Hargreaves children dances alone in their rooms in a massive dollhouse scene.
For the time jumps they created a viscous effect "like pushing your hand through jelly", so much so that they dubbed the effect "jelly vision".
Weta digital's challenge was basically to make a talking monkey look mundane and normal.
Actor Ken Hall, dressed in a gray tracking suit and two 4k cameras off to the side of the main Alexa 65 provided environment and body references. Ken would then be removed and clean plates shot.
Adam Godley did the voice of Pogo and was filmed doing the lines so his facial movements and expressions could be captured.
They even created a new technique for rendering clothing allowing them to simulate every strand of thread, procedurally, giving it a very realistic look.
