Amazon’s hit Tv series “The Man in the High Castle” explores an alternate reality where Germany and Japan won the second world war and New York city is now under German control.

ZOIC studios were in charge of creating this new alternate world with the idea that it would be more practical and organized, with less flair and creativity.
The majority was shot in real locations without green screens, the backdrops were replaced later with CG versions. The VFX team also painstakingly changed streetlights, crosswalks, and roadsigns to create a colder more mundane feel.
Barnstorm produced an average of 60 shots per episode, this included vehicle, and world creation, period work, and set extensions, as well as crowd and vehicle duplication and even some anti-aging effects for some of the flashback scenes.
The level of work to be done in each shot was extensive because not only did “New York” have to feel like “New Germany” it also had to look like the 1960s, almost everything had to be altered.
Barnstorm decided to use Blender rather than Maya, mainly because of the Cycles render engine which they used to render the majority of 3D objects.
All this rendering required massive processing power, so they set up cloud rendering using Amazons AWS servers through Deadline which allowed them to use up to 150 machines to render some of the bigger scenes.
