On February 23, 2025, American Airlines Flight AA292, a Boeing 787-9, was diverted to Rome after the crew received a bomb threat while cruising at FL400 from JFK to New Delhi. Due to severe weather at Istanbul, Rome was selected as the safest diversion airport, offering better weather and stronger security. Two Italian Air Force Eurofighter Typhoons were scrambled to intercept and escort the aircraft. After landing, the threat was deemed non-credible, and the flight was rescheduled to continue the next day due to crew rest regulations.
