Amiga 1200 Gameplay - Raiden (1 Level DEMO)
Raiden Demo, developed by Imagitec. The game was unreleased but it looks like it was going to be published by US Gold on the Kixx budget label in 1994.
I seem to remember this having the odd screen in the Amiga magazines at the time and playing the Jaguar release that would be set up in a demo kiosk in the high street shop Rumbelows (UK).
With recent talk about an Amiga Terra Cresta arcade port being found I was instantly reminded about this old game that never saw the light of day. I do recall some mumblings of the game source still existing in a vault somewhere but nothing heard about since.
There is a short review in CU Amiga magazine (oct 93) with the reviewers being unimpressed claiming an amiga should be able to handle the game with ease even on a half meg machine which I don't agree with. There are many example of poor arcade versions when limited to such spec.
The port is based on the the original Seibu Kaihatsucoin op. To be, it looks well done and plays just as you would expect. Sure there are some things missing including gfx effects but as an Amiga shootEmUp, it looks promising. Of course there is always that one problem that troubles many games and that is the option of sfx or music and I think given the time I see no reason both at once couldn't have worked. The music is quite simple and id expect a good three channel version would be possible with the the forth channel for sfx.
The demo plays through one level and loops upon completion. In the video I show two runs using music or sfx. the sfx is not that impressive but serviceable. Maybe thegame was aiming for a 1 meg a500 but with all those bullets it was limited to AGA Amigas. maybe limiting sales potential. The game doesnt seem to make much use of aga for extra colours or effects. Maybe the A1200s faster cpu is what made the difference between a playable and unplayable game when the action gets hectic.
