Turbo Outrun, published by SEGA in 1990. (720kb 2 disk version)

"Indulge your passion for automotive excellence with Turbo Out
Run. The owner of a race ready gauntlet, challenging you to a road rally from New York to California. In Turbo Out Run, you customize your Ferrari for a driving experience as individual as you are.
Adjust the tire grip. Modify the precision engine to your exacting standards. The road conditions and the weather are always changing. Make sure you change with them. After all, your legendary reputation as a sportsman is on the line; not to mention the companionship of the platinum blonde passenger with expensive tastes. So fire the chauffeur, slip on your leather driving gloves and plug into the high-performance power of Turbo Out Run."

The PC Dos game is unlike any other version and strays away from the Arcade formula by adding some strategy elements. Unfortunately, all they have done is produced a broken game.

The usual challenge of a time limit is retained and just as tight as the original although the stages are split up differently with checkpoints where you can spend money to upgrade you car. Money is earned by how much time you have left at the end of thew stage and if you can beat the Porsche. Beating the Porsche is no easy feat as it is on rails and does not have to worry about silly things such as speed, grip, traffic or even the road. Without the money you are to going to get far in the game.

The game intro duces type temperature that raises as you slip and slide across the road and should it reach 135, bang! this is a huge game breaking problem as you are required to manage your speed and the corners can be so tight you come to a near stop to get round them before your tires blow. The Porsche has no such worries and with blast through. This is so game breaking I cant get through even buying some high end upgrades. I suppose the devs want you to mix and match them as the level requires but I'm to fed up with the game to figure all hat out. I have noted that anything other than the best tire hopefully earned at the end of the first stage is less than useful and you wont likely get far. The function of the turbo is not for a prolonged burst of speed but is best used for faster acceleration and then let go. Holding it on is a waste as you cant go faster than the engine allows. Occasionally you will need to down shift so that you can accelerate backup faster but don't let it red line as the engine wil lblow!

Ultimately I fail to get through the game, the game wants far to much and the weak tire causes you to be slow overall costing much needed time. no fun at all. There are no credits or continues.

Played in Dosbox-X at 3000 cycles mcga, adlib. Maybe its the emus fault or I just suck and don't understand the game mechanics and it's a truly brilliant game in the right hands.
