Now this is a game i played to death back in the day. The overland map i more or less explored entirely even though it was not necessary at all.
Exploring the map often gave a random encounter where you could use funds to upgrade the mechs in your party as well as gain small bits of improvement to stats of your pilots. I think there were less than 10 mechs in total that were playable and the FASA universe has well over 1000 variants.
It was still a very fun game with little quirks in the game. For example, you can shoot out of the stadium to "steal" a JENNER mech, which was strongest in game when upgraded and only available near the beginning but very hard to do get. You would probably reload your save game 20 times.

The game had physical copy protection (i think) as well as non explicit protection where you have to set co-ordinates in your base of star systems to see the ending sequence. You would never figure it out unless you had the manual. I could have sworn there was the usual copy protection where you have to guess the name of mech parts to get into the game...
