Like all combat class machines, the Slaughterspine was created by the rogue Subordinate Function HEPHAESTUS with the sole purpose of combating humans and curtailing the hunting of various machines.

The Nora huntress Aloy encountered Slaughterspines on multiple occasions during her adventures: first, when she, Varl, and Beta traveled into the aberrant Caudron GEMINI, intending to merge HEPHAESTUS with GAIA, where a Slaughterspine was fabricated by HEPHAESTUS in a last-ditch effort to prevent Aloy from returning to the Cauldron's core. Later, after Beta released HEPHAESTUS into Far Zenith's machine printing network as part of Aloy's final assault on the Zenith base, the rogue AI fabricated a number of Slaughterspines (along with Thunderjaws and Dreadwings) with which it combated the Zenith's Specter Drones, as well as the Zeniths themselves, to devastating effect.
