Some experiments where I tried to remove the backgrounds in SC4 in order to capture the characters as a "2D sprite". None of the techniques I used really worked though. If there's anyone experience with After Effects reading this and have some tips or suggestions, feel free to post them.

0:00 - 0:10 - This is one of the few stages I could find where the character can stand completely against the background (instead of the ground). But the water constantly animates and I could not remove it entirely (I used color key here).

0:11 - 0:13 - Another stage I'd think would work well since the background is so dark and the character is bright. I used a color key here and unfortunately that didn't work well at all, it mistakenly keyed out many colours on the characters too.

0:14 - 0:16 - Same stage, but trying "difference matte" instead using the some footage as matte just shifted with one second. That worked better, but not perfect as those lights animate.

0:17 - 0:18 - This is one of the Star Wars stages. One nice thing is that a part of the background is completely black which makes it perfect for color key. But there's a bunch of other parts of the stage too, I tried to remove those with difference matte. But the overall result wasn't very good.

0:19 - 0:25 - This was one of the best tests since the background is completely still for a period of time (until the elevator starts moving again). Although one problem I got with difference matte is that it conflicts with the character who's in the animation I'm comparing with. I'm gonna try something else later where I use a difference matte based on the exact same scenario but with the character having used the invisible skill.

0:26 - Only barely visible. This is actually the best looking test but done in a way which is really impractical. I simply created a mask around the entire character, and then updated the mask for each frame (which took about 11 minutes per frame). Way way way too time consuming. The rest of the video shows the process of updating that mask for a single frame.
