Anish Giri's inspired play against Wang Hao in the Catalan | Candidates 2020-21
Arjun Erigaisi essayed the Catalan against Nihal Sarin in the final game of their match at the Super Juniors Cup 2020. Anish Giri was one of the commentators at the finals along with Vidit Gujrathi and Teimour Radjabov. Four months later at the Candidates 2020-21 Anish Giri played the same opening! Was this inspired by Arjun? We can only guess! But one thing is for sure Anish Giri played an amazing positional game to beat Wang Hao in the 9th round of the Candidates 2020-21.
With this win Anish Giri makes a strong claim for the title with 5.0/9. He is now in the joint second position just half a point behind Ian Nepomaniachtchi. In this video IM Sagar Shah analyzes this instructive encounter.
