Antonio Vivaldi Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8, RV 297, "L'inverno" (Winter)
II. Largo
This movement from Vivaldi's "Winter" Concerto is one of the most beloved classics from the classical music repertoire. It is one of the earliest examples of what we call program music— music with a narrative element. You can hear the music depicting rain drops by the pizzicato (plucking of the strings on string instruments) in the ripieno violins. (the non-solo violins in the ensemble) Here's the section of the original sonnets that accompanies this movement,
"Before the fire to pass peaceful,
Contented days while the rain outside pours down."
