For gimmicky levels like this one where your eco is restricted, it's a better idea to use units with range attacks and microable (like cavalry archers), minimizing the damage taken when engaging and can be healed, preserving your resources. They are also less impacted by pathing. Most important thing? They cost wood and gold instead of food.
Once you settle in Carthage you can start actual eco and, well, continue heavy cav archers and cavaliers/hussars.
I wasted a lot of time in this run, but also because I wanted to explore around a little.
