Apple M3 Chip to be Faster and More Efficient than M2
Apple is reportedly ramping up testing of the M3 chip, according to a report by Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter. The new chip is said to be built on the 3 nm process and will feature a 12-core CPU, 18-core GPU, and 36 GB of RAM. Gurman believes that Macs with the new chip will begin arriving in late 2023 or early 2024.
The new CPU will reportedly consist of six performance cores and six efficiency cores. This is similar to the M1 to M2 CPU upgrade, which saw the number of performance cores increase from four to eight. Gurman believes that the M3 chip will be a significant upgrade over the M2 chip, and could help to boost Mac sales.
Gurman also suggests that the M3 Pro and M3 Max will have similar gains over the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The M3 Pro is said to have a 14-core CPU and 40-core GPU, while the M3 Max is said to have a 20-core CPU and 64-core GPU. The M3 Ultra is said to be even more powerful, with a 40-core CPU and 128-core GPU.
None of this is confirmed, and we expect to learn more details during WWDC, which is expected to take place next month. However, Gurman's report is a good indication that Apple is working on a number of new M3 chips that could significantly improve the performance of the Mac lineup.
