Arkanoid 2 aka Arkanoid: The Revenge of Doh was a 1987 arcade game by Taito, a sequel to the Breakout clone, Arkanoid. The game was later ported to a bunch of other home formats such as the Amstrad CPC, C64, Amiga, MSX, NES, PC, ZX Spectrum and the Apple IIGS, but in this video I am looking at the 1988 Atari ST version which was published by Imagine and programmed by Peter Johnson, who had some great experience given that he handled the ST port of Arkanoid.

If you’re familiar with Breakout or even the previous Arkanoid game, then you’ll know what to expect here. Your task is to simply clear all of the coloured blocks at the top of the screen by rebounding a ball off your ship located at the bottom. Every now and again various power ups will drop down from the top which will give you a bunch of new abilities such as multi-ball, allow your ship to shoot bullets and a sticky shot to name a few.

The levels themselves have a nice bit of variety with plenty of colour, some smooth scrolling sprites and a decent variety of different enemy types. I also particularly liked that unlike the last game you are free to choose your progression through the game as you are given a choice of which level to try next. It really does help if you are stuck on a certain stage.

Overall given that Arkanoid was also made by Peter Johnson it’s not a surprise that the game plays virtually the same just with a bunch of new levels and power ups and that’s not a bad thing. Arkanoid played very well and this one plays even better. Revenge of Doh is my favourite of the breakout clones available on the ST and is well worth a quick blast.
