Arkanonoid [アルかのんノイド] Game Sample - PC/Doujin
"Arukanonnoid" or "Arkanonoid" (Arkanon for short) is a simple Arkanoid clone with some visual novel / adventure aesthetic and is based on the popular "Kanon" franchise, developed and published by Right-Brain Games in 2001. The game features some voiceovers and its standout feature is that it always features "versus" gameplay, where you play against a computer or friend and try to break blocks to deal the most damage before time runs out (or secure a victory through total domination). The story is a parody of your typical "Let's Play and Humiliate" Japanese concept (where characters play a game and the loser is humiliated in various ways) and "Card Captor Sakura". In the game, you play as Nayuki Minase and are guided by Keropii to obtain "Kanon Cards" from various Kanon characters. When Nayuki confronts her target, she can release the powers in her card and wand to become "Card Captor Nayuki". The characters aren't humiliated in any graphic way and the game is fairly cute. Cutscenes you've unlocked can be viewed in the game's Appendix.
The way the Arkanoid portion works is that there are two lines that the paddles can navigate: an upper and lower line. On the lower line, players move about freely to the left or right but cannot move through the enemy paddle. By holding "up", players can jump up on the upper line to get around the opposing paddle as well as have a better chance to hit the ball on the rebound. The color of the ball determines who has it active, and the active ball breaks blocks and deals damage to the opposing player. Players cannot simply jump to the higher line however as there is a catch; doing so consumes energy, which is represented by an angelic meter to the left and right of the playfield. When this gauge falls below half, Nayuki becomes tired and you are incapable of jumping until it recharges, adding some element of strategy to the game. Like more modern forms of Arkanoid and Breakout, you can also grab power-ups which make the paddle bigger, speed up the ball, drain an opponent's energy, etc.
This is a video of the game in action. Because the game is old and no longer available, I've compiled the disk data for distribution... however, you probably won't be able to get the music playing on its own without burning the game to a CD, and doing that isn't easy as it comes on a "multisession disk" and can't be properly converted into an iso. As such, I've put the raw files in a folder as well as an .mds file that can be burned to a CD -- it's up to you if you want to go through the trouble. You can get it at:
