Asheron's Call was a popular mmo released way back in 1999 by Turbine Entertainment Software but was actually published as a Microsoft game until 2004. The game lasted for over 17 years with it's original servers but eventually closed down on January 31st, 2017.

The game has since been summoned from death by a group of dedicated fans and a new server for the game is now live to play, so I jumped in to explore and answer Asheron's Call. (A link to the private server can be found at the end of this description.)

This mmo has a lot of lore behind it and once had a huge player base, which seen it at one point in it's history in competition with some of the greatest mmos of the time, mmos like Everquest, and Ultima Online. Graphically the game is okay, but it looks quite dated, even for today's standards.

Game controls are a little weird, they kinda remind me of how the movement in the original Resident Evil 1 was, which I was not particularly keen on, but it works for this game so I managed. There's one thing I noticed after playing for about 10 minutes, there's hardly NO music what so ever but the world is alive with sound effects from your surroundings, nature, and monsters.

Due to the private server having an issue with Windows 10 the full screen don't work properly so you have to tweak the settings before and during play. Getting around is confusing, npcs don't have quest markers above their heads so finding quests is just as hard as Final Fantasy XI. Finding locations for the quest requirements is a bit of a chore also, go to X.., Y.. location and do this or do that, etc.

Over all the game is great fun to take a look at play for a short time but investing in it long term... there's better mmos out there now, one good thing though.. at least the game is now free.

If you want to try out Asheron's Call PvE/PvP servers then here's the link to the current instructions: https://www.gdleac.com/

Let me know how you got on, memories you have playing, and thoughts. Have fun!!
