Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. Black Flag is the sixth installment in the Assassin's Creed series and focuses on ship-based exploration in an open world map but maintains the series' third-person land-based exploration, melee combat, and stealth system. Multiplayer is available but only in land-based modes and settings.
Black Flag’s main story is set in the West Indies from 1715 to 1722 in the three main cities of Havana, Nassau, and Kingston. During this timeframe, which is considered the Golden Age of Piracy, the game follows a Welsh pirate named Edward Kenway. Edward is the grandfather of Assassin's Creed III protagonist Connor and the father of antagonist Haytham Kenway. Edward searches for fortune and a mysterious location only known as the Observatory, for which both the Assassins and the Templars are also searching along with an attempted establishment of an independent Pirate republic in the Caribbean.
Black Flag’s framing story is set in the 21st century where the player portrays an employee of a modern-day Templar company called Abstergo Industries. The player’s character is manipulated into unraveling the Assassin-Templar conflict secrets as well as the race known as the First Civilization.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U in October 2013. In November 2013 the game was released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game was ported to the Nintendo Switch in December 2019 as part of The Rebel Collection alongside Assassin's Creed Rogue. The game was also released for Google Stadia in September 2021.
