Assault Horizon: Avoiding DFM - Nightmare
Simple premise here: just how much DFM/ASM can I avoid in Assault Horizon? We're gonna find out. This occurred to me before, and was later suggested by a few people, but I frankly didn't think it'd be interesting enough. Well, turns out I was wrong. There's quite a lot more scripted sequences you can avoid than I thought, and perhaps more surprisingly, even fewer enemies you actually have to *kill* in DFM.
The first mission is, of course, not the best example, with its enforced tutorials, but it does give you a glimpse of what to expect - quitting out on scripted paths early, and sniping everyone else. Overall, with the right skills, it's very much possible to play the vast majority of the game normally - though that easier said than done, as unlocking skills takes quite a while. Are we left with a great game, then? Not really, frankly. Doing this further highlights AH's second major problem, one I consider worse than DFM - the terrible mission pacing, an almost inevitable consequence of Kazutoki Kono's direction. But that'll be more evident ahead.
For this, I'm playing the Enhanced Edition on PC, giving me access to most of the DLC (which you can't use in campaign, only Free Mission or MP...) and significantly enhanced graphics. It's... still AH's engine though, with its known strengths and weaknesses. But it does look great at times, though Youtube's encoding has been particularly damaging this time around.
