Assetto Corsa - Here Comes AI !
47Kunos have added AI to Assetto Corsa , for now you can only race AI in some limited events but already the AI can be quite fun to race making a welcome change from hot lapping on your own.
The Good
- On Hard / alien the top 5 or so cars drive at a reasonable pace around the track
- AI will sometimes get into micro fights between themselves
- AI sometimes lock up and make errors in some ways as you would expect
- AI take multiple lines around corners
- After 2 or so laps the spacing of the AI seems quite natural and not a total convoy
- Game still runs at a very good FPS with full grid of multiple cars
The bad
- Don't carry enough speed though certain corners
- Brake erratically through and before corners
- Are slow when more than 3 cars are close together
- Don't defend in a realistic way
- Go from being ultra passive slam on bakes to get out your way to pile into the back of you like a mad man at the flick of a switch
- AI don't feel pressure of you making certain moves
- They will just barge into you if you make a tight move
- AI don't try to fool you as real drivers would
All in all The AI perform there function in that they provide a reasonable challenge to race against ( on the hardest settings) and are more enjoyable to drive and learn tracks with than just hot lapping on your own.
How are the AI different in AC than other games ?
I think they make some nice moves , take multiple lines in some regards feel more organic and fight between themselves more than AI in GSC , RF2 but at the same time they also do more weird things and in some way drive like drunks.
Its a nice addition to the game and the AI quality is easily on a par with other driving games, easily good enough to provide an enjoyable single player experience.
However If you are used to racing on-line with real people the AI will in many ways be irritating and fall massively short of what you are used to.
Assetto Corsa is shaping up to be quite the simulator !
