What do you do when you have an old Netbook that you no longer use and you think is too low powered to be of any use? You turn it into a media server!

Here I have an Asus 1000HE netbook running Ubuntu 13.04 and the latest Plex media server. As well, the small system doubles as a shared print server and small file server. File transfers on the network are in the 12MB range, which may not be superfast, but when transferring 1-3GigByte files doesn't take very long.

I originally thought heat would be a problem, but this remains fairly manageable and only really spikes into the 71c range when I remote desktop to it via Splashdot streamer. The N280 Atom processor is rated for a 90C max so I still have plenty of headroom.

Next will be to add an external USB Drive to house a larger file server. I'm also using it as a print server (LaserJet) which has worked out very well.

As to the Plex Media Server:
Videos stream via Direct Play at 720p without issue over wifi to a roku 2 running the Plex App out to a 55inch LED HD tv. I would NOT recommend having the netbook transcode as this could lead to some VERY long wait times and lots of buffering. I will run some 1080p tests soon, but I believe there will be no problems vai direct play with files of that size.
