Data East is known for some pretty wacky games. Just ask @WeirdVideoGames. Atomic Runner (or Chelnov, as it's known in the arcades or in Japan) might not exactly take the cake, but it's still got some pretty memorable moments.
I don't think I ever even knew about the arcade original until maybe a few years ago. I remember playing the Mega Drive version as a kid, and being thoroughly flattened by the high difficulty level, to the point where even making it to stage 2 with continues felt like a major accomplishment. Felt like revisiting it again a few weeks ago as an adult, and found that it wasn't nearly as insurmountible as what I remembered, though it still took me until earlier this month to actually beat for the first time.
Full disclaimer: Savestates were used because otherwise there's no way I would've been able to get a perfect run all in one go. Though I only made a single savestate at the start of each stage (partially since that'd be easier to edit around).
