In the 1880's the Russian Empire built a fort on the river Biebrza about thirty miles from East Prussia to defend their border with Germany. It was called Osowiec
The Germans first attacked in 1914, with units from the Eighth Army attacking in Spetember. The fortress held out against several German attacks and artillery barrages, lasting until August of 1915. At four in the morning on August sixth, the Germans attacked the fortress with artillery and chlorine gas.
German infantry advanced after the gas, expecting light resistance. They were met by a counter-charge of a hundred Russians coughing up blood from the gas.
