With the popularity of performance-oriented hatchbacks on the rise, the "hot hatch" genre could have been started by the A112 Abarth that appeared in 1971. Using the Autobianchi A112 as the foundation, the concept Abarth A112 came equipped with a highly modified version of the base 903 cc inline-4 whose displacement was increased to 982 cc to produce 106.5 HP. This allowed the compact 3-door, which measured 127.1 inches long and 58.2 inches wide, to reach a top speed of 208 km/h.
The production A112 Abarth used the same 982 cc engine, but with output decreased to 57.1 HP, which was still 20 percent more than the base powerplant. Abarth continued to make numerous improvements to the A112's performance. In 1975, engine displacement was increased to 1050 cc resulting in 70 HP, and in 1979, the transmission was changed from a 4-speed to a 5-speed manual. Production of the car ended in 1985, but it definitely made a mark in the annals of automobile history, creating a genre that's still popular today.
