If you can't use auto-pilot for mining or salvaging, the auto-firing option is very useful when manually mining in sector.

The auto-firing option allows your mining laser or salvaging laser to automatically work when near the target. Ex: Asteroid, Wreckage.

Thus leaving you free of left mouse clicking anything.

However, if you have a captain, then it may be more beneficial to use "Auto-pilot" for salvaging or mining or even attack all enemy.

It is a subjective decision to take.
