Back to the Future Part II, released in 1989, took Marty McFly on a trip to a fantastical 2015. While hoverboards and self-lacing shoes remain elusive, the film got some surprising things right about our world:
The Rise of Digital Payments: Remember the scene where Marty donates to the clock tower with a futuristic device? This foreshadowed the explosion of contactless payments and mobile wallets we use today.
Big Screen Bonanza: The movie envisioned homes with giant flat-screen TVs. Widescreen TVs are now commonplace, and while they might not be wall-mounted quite yet, the basic concept was spot on.
A Team in Miami: Back in 1989, Miami lacked a baseball team. The film boldly predicted one, even getting the city (though not the World Series win) right with the eventual arrival of the Miami Marlins.
Of course, some predictions were wide of the mark – fax machines haven't quite achieved the ubiquity the film envisioned. But Back to the Future 2's peek into the future shows that even fictional worlds can offer glimpses of what's to come, making it a fun and oddly insightful time capsule.
