Players who have been part of the early access for Baldur's Gate 3 will need to delete their current game installations and redownload the entire 120GB game upon its official launch. Unfortunately, there won't be a preload option available. However, the good news is that the game will be Steam Deck verified and support cross-saves, allowing players to continue their progress seamlessly on different platforms.
The highly anticipated PC launch of Baldur's Gate 3 is scheduled for this week, with Larian Studios releasing all the final details. Starting from August 3, players will be required to initiate a massive download for the full release. Additionally, the company has shared new gameplay features and information about its availability on other supported platforms.
Baldur's Gate 3 is set to exit early access and will officially launch for Windows on Thursday at 11 am EST. The transition from early access to the full release comes with significant changes, necessitating the removal of old installations and save files to avoid potential conflicts.
Upon launch, the game will be a hefty 122 GB download, with no option for preloading. This means that all customers, regardless of pre-order status or prior early access enjoyment, will have to undertake the massive download and rebuild their characters from scratch.
On the positive side, those who plan to play Baldur's Gate 3 on other platforms during their respective launches can carry over their PC save files. Larian Studios has confirmed cross-save support between the PC and PlayStation 5 versions. The PS5 version is expected to be released on September 6. Additionally, Steam and GOG customers will receive the Mac version when it launches, though the release date is yet to be confirmed. While the Xbox version is still in development, it is likely to be available only in 2024. The main challenge lies in optimizing the split-screen co-op mode to run on the Xbox Series S, a prerequisite for its release on Series X.
Larian Studios is also working to ensure that Baldur's Gate 3 is Steam Deck verified upon or shortly after launch, having already fine-tuned the graphics settings for optimal performance. Coupled with cross-saves, this provides console players with the ability to continue their saved games while on the move.
Although Larian did not provide an extensive system requirements chart detailing specifications for various resolutions, they did offer some recommendations. A GeForce RTX 3060 should deliver 60 frames per second at 1440p, while an RTX 4080 or 4090-level GPU is recommended for 4K gameplay. These recommendations assume native rendering without any upscaling solutions. Currently, the game supports DLSS 2, and Larian plans to implement FSR 2.0 by early September, both of which should significantly enhance performance.
Regarding gameplay, Larian unveiled a new skill tree featuring mind-flayer-related psychic abilities for player characters and party members, which could profoundly impact the game's storyline. Additionally, players will have the ability to respec their entire parties, introducing further possibilities for narrative influence.
Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, recently confirmed the company's interest in developing another title within the Divinity series following the success of Divinity: Original Sin 2. However, this project will be undertaken after the release of Baldur's Gate 3, with the team taking a creative break in between.
