It wasn't too drastic a difference, but the game did ease up for a while. I would say this mostly has to do with the main gimmick of the game, where the large, empty space fills up with more obstacles that builds in difficulty each stage. When you beat the hardest version of a stretch of stages, it more or less resets to square one, and those first few stages are short and simple. I think this is a smart decision, as it gives some breathing space in-between difficulty spikes.
