RACHAEL OF THE SMOKEY EYES will open the upcoming BALTES & ZÄYN album also featuring songs inspired by RIDLEY SCOTT’S timelessly stylish neo-noir cult film, Blade Runner and DENIS VILLENEUVE’S compelling epic sequel, Blade Runner 2049. It is the first of two songs retelling the fateful first encounter between Rick Deckard, the blade runner, and Rachael, the unwitting replicant who becomes his quarry, during the iconic Voight-Kampff Test performed by Deckard on Rachael to determine whether she is human or replicant. This scene has become a pop culture meme and trope over the decades.

RACHAEL OF THE SMOKEY EYES, written from Deckard‘s point of view, deals with him grappling with the stunning realization that he has fallen abjectly in love with a – to him, initially – soulless replicant, who he may have to execute in the line of duty. Overwhelmed by her mysterious, film noir heroine air, he falls in love with Rachaels‘s lovely green eyes, hauntingly made up in mysterious smokey shades, connecting with the soul he finds there against all expectations. In the end, his love for Rachael, who actually saves his life by shooting a replicant assailant with Deckard’s own gun, wins out and they flee North together to an uncertain destiny.

STEVE BALTES‘ darkly melodic, guitar-driven electronic backing which inspired the song, creates a fittingly electrifying, yet transparently vibrant and dramatic atmosphere, reflecting the blade runner’s conflicted feelings; his inner struggle between duty, and an irresistible infatuation which inevitably deepens into encompassing desire and love. The urgency of LUCIAN ZÄYN’S anguished vocals are counterbalanced by the silvery, soft, angelic filigree of back-up singer ALICIA’S voice echoing ZÄYN’S lines, each vocal line inhabiting a space of its own, yet one poignantly intertwined with the other, like the souls of Deckard and Rachael in the end.

RACHAEL OF THE SMOKEY EYES is the first of four Blade Runner offerings in the upcoming BALTES & ZÄYN album which explore and recount the triumph and tragedy of the iconic Deckard and Rachael love story, not only as it began and left off in the original Ridley Scott film, but as further unfolds in the Denis Villeneuve sequel with shocking revelations and catastrophic implications for both sides of the ongoing interplanetary armed conflict of replicants rebelling against their human masters, on their quest to win human status.

This song takes up the grand overarching theme, not only of the Blade Runner films but of Philip K. Dick’s original novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep: what is the human soul and what is the role of memory in defining it? Who has the right to consider themselves human?
