🧪 What is PLA?
Full name: Polylactic Acid
Type: Bioplastic (a type of thermoplastic made from renewable resources)
Source materials: Typically derived from corn starch, sugarcane, or other plant-based sources.
Biodegradable: Under industrial composting conditions (not in your backyard), PLA breaks down more easily than traditional plastics.
🛠️ Why is PLA Used in 3D Printing?
Ease of Use: Very beginner-friendly; minimal warping, no heated bed required (though helpful).
Low Printing Temperature: Typically prints at 190–220°C.
Minimal Odor: Unlike ABS, which smells like burning plastic, PLA has a mild, sweet smell when printing.
Good Surface Finish: Often produces smooth, shiny results with good detail.
Environmental Appeal: Because it’s plant-based and biodegradable (in proper facilities), it’s often marketed as more eco-friendly.
📉 Downsides of PLA:
Brittle: Less flexible and impact-resistant compared to other materials like ABS or PETG.
Heat Sensitivity: Softens at around 60°C, so it's not suitable for high-temperature applications (e.g., car interiors).
Not Great Outdoors: UV and moisture can degrade it over time if left outside.
